Refinements

After choosing the legend and the preferred approach, we began thinking about the art style, genre, and overall game design, including characters, actions, and atmosphere.

Play Methods

The final concept is a 2D top-down adventure, inspired by Bullet Echo. For gameplay, we drew inspiration from the classic Snake Game: the musaranhos (rats) will follow the main character in a line formation as they are rescued or join the party. Our main musaranho will have a whistle mechanic, used to distract fishermen, similar to the mechanic in Horizon Zero Dawn. Eventually, the final mechanic will allow the protagonist to transform into human form.

As for the art style, we were inspired by the village of Óbidos, especially its organic and diagonal layout, which we reflected in the map design. We also incorporated the lake, a central element in the legend.

Games Through Culture Concept

We aim to reflect cultural values and the spirit of legends through interactions between musaranhos, items, and even the fishermen. The musaranhos just want to live in peace within their own tribe, but their metamorphic nature scares the humans who, out of fear, begin to hunt them.

Expert Council Feedback

The council was enthusiastic about the rat concept, the playable character, and the general setting. They asked thoughtful questions about the core values we want to convey, and about the difficulty curve, especially whether the game becomes harder as more rats join the party, since none of them can be seen by the fishermen. If one is spotted, they all risk being caught.
